Villages and Visionaries:

History Exhibitions to come to Hordle, Sway and Tiptoe

There has been a great response from all sorts of people in Hordle,Tiptoe and Everton offering material to the Museum for its forthcoming exhibition on the history of the villages. We are therefore putting together an extraordinarily rich and varied exhibition which should intrigue you whether you can trace your family back in the area or have recently moved here. Tin churches, debutantes, steam engines for sterilizing soil, murder enquiries at the Plough Inn, 1920s football teams, Victorian ladies ice-skating at Wainsford, lightening struck thatched schools and naked dancing in Vaggs Lane will all feature. I am still trying to find out about Oswald Moseley’s visit to Hordle, the occupation described as a ‘fish hook’ and hoards of gold in Hordle. So please let me know if you can shed any light on any of these tales.

It is extraordinary that so much material has come to light given that these communities were until relatively recently scattered hamlets of small farms, tradesmen and a few retired gentlemen. Boundaries have constantly moved and villages changed beyond recognition challenging many of our concepts of what makes a village.

Our exhibition will be touring the village halls as follows and each will have a different focus depending on the village in question. So why not tour them all? The exhibitions will be family friendly and free of charge so drop in when you can.

I do need some help at the exhibitions, so if you have some spare time and would like to give me a hand.

please contact me on 01590 676969

Please watch out for posters and our website with further information about associated illustrated talks on the Shakers, the history of Wootton/Tiptoe School and the building of Sway tower.

Sarah Newman.

This Illustration shows one of the Shakers dancing in worship taken from the front page of the Graphic newspaper January 9th 1875.

160 Shakers set up their ‘commune’ at New Forest Lodge in Vaggs Lane, Hordle and were considered such a challenge to the norms of the day that they made the front page of this and many other national papers.

Hordle Allotment Association - April 2010

We are pleased to announce the formation of Hordle Allotment Association in February 2010 by those

who wish to become allotment holders in Hordle Parish (covering Tiptoe, Hordle and Everton).

The formation of the Association became appropriate as a result of a number of significant events, which included:

The involvement of the Parish Council in the quest to establish Allotments within the Parish of Hordle. This resulted from the submission to The Council of a list of more than forty aspiring allotment holders.

Four members of the Parish Council have kindly agreed to give their time to help on a working party which is committed to providing allotments for Hordle.

The need to register (affiliate) with the national society to obtain legal advice and support.

The identification of some suitable plots and the need to engage with landholders with a view to taking our quest forward.

The need to be a recognised group to speak on behalf of would be allotment holders and to have the ability to research fundraising options.

For more information about the Association please contact - HordleAllotments@googlemail.com or Sue on 01425 612351.

Additionally if any reader is aware of any land that might be available for use as allotments please let us know and we will investigate further.

The Association would like to place on record its grateful thanks to District Councillor Penny Lovelace for her contribution of £500 from the New Forest District Council’s Community Engagement Grant Scheme.

HORDLE GARDENING CLUB NEWS

With the growing season in full swing the gardening club are well into their programme and are looking forward to several additional events in the pipeline for the coming months.

Twenty five club members will be visiting the home of The Prince of Wales at Highgrove during the first week of July.

Later in the month we will be repeating the skittles evening which was so successful last year.

Also during this busy month the club will be holding its closed show, with classes for many commonly grown vegetables as well as flowers and fun items associated with gardening. Our exhibits will once again be judged by Mr Roy Prior from New Milton. Roy is a well respected and leading

authority on clematis.

Our trip to Abbotsbury sub-tropical gardens and the nearby Swannery and Tropical Gardens has been confirmed for early September. This promises to be a splendid day out.

Annual membership runs from January each year and costs just £6.

The Club has around sixty members and we would welcome anyone interested in joining us for the coming year and beyond.
