COUNCIL OPTIMISTIC OVER CROSS-ROADS

Following a meeting with the County Council safety engineering team, Hordle councillors are pleased that the concerns of the community regarding repeated accidents at the school cross-roads are being addressed at the highest level. Additional measures to calm traffic approaching the cross-roads, improved visibility signage, road markings and more drastic cut-back of hedges are among the measures which will be officially submitted to the community for approval. Once agreement is finalised, work on the improvements could commence in April.

See Planning & Environment Minutes 15 February 2010 for update.

GREEN FINGERS IN THE PIE

A Big thank you for your help in making a great start to improving the local environment of Hordle Parish.

With many donations and assistance from local residents we are well underway.

The BBC Breathing Places campaign – ‘Tree O’clock’ was well attended and we were able to plant 72 tree/bushes adjacent to Acacia Road Open Space. Along with the saplings provided through the BBC, donations were received from Otters Nurseries of a large Beech tree, Beech and Hawthorne hedging, Cornus and Holly. Redcliffe Garden Centre provided Cornus and the fritillaries for under planting. Staff and local residents provided

further plants and bulbs to finish the scheme off.

Further donations from Otters Nurseries have provided a range of bedding plants and tulips to bring spring colour to the entrance of the sports ground at Hordle recreation ground.

The bulbs purchased by the Amenities committee have been planted at the entrances to Everton Recreation Ground off Fry’s Lane & Hordle Recreation Ground off Vaggs Lane.

A further donation of bulbs from a local resident has been planted around the new Beech tree planted at the triangle/cycleway off Stopples Lane.

Bulbs purchased with an anonymous donation are to be planted at the triangle at Hare Lane and Ashley Lane along with some trees/shrubs to be purchased with money donated by the Hordle Women’s Institute.

The overgrown area adjacent to the Hordle car park off Vaggs Lane has been cleared by the Community Payback team and Paul, our hard working handyman/grounds keeper and it has now been planted with the large amount of plants donated by Agars Nurseries and a further donation of eight pyracantha plants by Mr and Mrs Cramp which will provide a colourful back drop and is also good for insects and birds.
The overgrown hedge/trees at the Everton Pavilion car park, Fry Lane has also received attention thanks to Paul, Community Payback and the help and tools gratefully provided by a neighbour.

We would like to keep the momentum of this environmental work moving. All action taken, however small, will make a huge difference to the local environment and our community.

Further donations would be gratefully received especially shrubs and small amenity trees, wood chipping and mulches and of course your ideas and involvement.

Hordle, Everton and Tiptoe Village Design Statement

An opportunity to be involved

Hordle Parish Council are seeking help from residents of Hordle, Everton and Tiptoe to form a Working Party to draw up a Village Design Statement (VDS) for the three villages. The preparation of a VDS does not demand expert design or planning knowledge, the only requirement being a strong interest and enthusiasm for the future wellbeing of your village.

The Village Design Statement will be an opportunity for local residents to have a say over development in their villages. It will set out clear and simple guidance for the design of all development in the villages and surrounding countryside, based upon their character. It is important to note that a VDS will not prevent change from happening. However, it can help influence any new building details such as design and materials, to ensure they are in harmony with the settings and make a positive contribution to the immediate environment.

The VDS is one of the important issues identified by the community in the Hordle Vision, ‘Plan for Three Villages’. It is anticipated that the Parish Council will lead the project under the guidance of the community planning officer at NFDC and there will be liaison with both the NFDC and NFNPA planning officers. Once approved, the VDS will become a Supplementary Planning Document and will be taken into consideration in future planning applications with NFDC and the NFNPA. Successful VDS documents have already been produced by other Parish and Town Councils including Fordingbridge which can be viewed at www.fordingbridge.gov.uk .

With this in mind, the Parish Council is now seeking members of the community who are willing to commit themselves to the project. The project needs a good balance of people to research, consult and present the collective views of the residents of the three villages within the parish.

It is anticipated that the project will take up to a year and require attendance at meetings once or twice a month.

Further information on the VDS is available on this website If you are interested in the project and would like to consider volunteering, please either email vds@hordlepc.com or telephone Susan Whitcher, the Clerk, at Hordle Parish Council on 01425 611119 for more information.

Hordle and Sway History Project

What a fantastic response to the idea of an exhibition on the history of Hordle parish we have had at St Barbe Museum since my article in the last edition of Hordle News. All sorts of people have been in touch to make a variety of contributions and have opened up aspects of Hordle’s history which are completely new to me, at least, such as Hordle’s Marilyn Ward becoming Miss UK in 1971!We already have some wonderful material from family albums which will feature in our exhibition such as pictures of Hordle school and its pupils in the 1880s.

However it is not just the old photos that are so interesting. I have also been lent more recent photographs of the Old Vicarage, a magnificent red brick house behind the Church which was redeveloped in 1990 and all trace removed apart from the name of course. Photographs of Hordle Spurs Football Team from 1938, the Hordle Young Wives and the Home Guard will surely jog memories of old friends and families for some and give others a sense of what the village was like before the major developments of recent years.

If you have any photographs of your family with a Hordle landmark in the background or school or club pictures, we would love to hear from you.

A few volunteers have also offered to share and develop their personal research on subjects such as Everton Village, Hordle and Tiptoe Schools which they have been pursuing for many years. We hope that this might be a good opportunity to develop our knowledge and understanding of the villages for the future. We are also keen to make connections between the past, present and future so if you have an interest in getting people involved and thinking about their village, then please get in touch.

Our current ideas include some creative writing workshops, photography competitions and even a community play based around the story of the Shakers.

We plan to hold our exhibition at the Hordle WI, Everton Church Hall and the Jireh Hall in Tiptoe at different times in June and July, so watch the local press for further details nearer the time. We will need some volunteers to help set up and steward the exhibitions for a few hours , so if you are interested in your local history and have a few hours to spare,

please call me on 01590 676969  or email sarah.newman@stbarbe-museum. org.uk

HORDLE ALLOTMENT ASSOCIATION

The Hordle Allotment Association was recently formed on 9th February 2010 by those who are hoping to become allotment holders.

The formation of the Association became appropriate as a result of a number of significant events which included:

* The involvement of Hordle Parish Council in the quest to establish Allotments within the Parish of Hordle. This resulted from the submission to The Council of a list of more than forty aspiring allotment holders. Four members of the Parish Council have kindly agreed to give their time to help on a working party which is committed to providing allotments for Hordle.

*The location of two suitable and available plots of land which can now be prepared for cultivation.

*The suggestion from independent advisers to form a society to give greater credibility to activities such as fund raising and the search for additional sites.

For more information about the Association please contact:- HordleAllotments@googlemail.com

Should any reader be aware of land that may be available for allotments within the parish, or wish to be added to the waiting list for Allotments, please contact in the first instance The Parish Clerk on 01425 611119
