Village Design Statement for Hordle Parish WHAT IS A VILLAGE DESIGN STATEMENT ? A Village Design Statement (VDS) is a document agreed by the local community as representing that community’s views of how they would wish their village/s to be developed in the future. The VDS should set out clear and simple guidance for the design of all development in a village and surrounding countryside, based upon its character. It is important to note that a VDS will not stop change from happening. However it can help influence any new building details, such as design and materials, to ensure they are in harmony with the settings and make a positive contribution tothe immediate environment. The document is about managing change, not preventing it. HOW CAN A ‘VDS’ BECOME A USEFUL DOCUMENT ? The document should be structured in such a way that it becomes a useful tool for the Local Authority planning department who would recognise it as having status on a par with that of a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD). The structure of the document must contain the following:-
and distinctiveness in new development
neighbouring communities with traffic and communication links
HOW CAN THE PARISH COUNCIL ASSIST? In accordance with the wishes of the community, who demonstrated through their responses recorded in ‘THE PARISH PLAN ‘ the parish council have taken a strong lead towards implementing this aspiration of the local populace. At the meeting of the full council on 5th July 2010, members voted unanimously in favour of forming a Working Party, set up for producing a ‘Village Design Statement’ with an objective to place it before the council by first quarter, 2011. This means the mechanism required to facilitate production of this document is now set in place and fully supported by Hordle Parish Council. The work in creating the VDS will also be supported by our Local Authorities, New Forest District Council and the New Forest National Park Authority. The former ‘Working Group’, set up to report on the feasibility of producing the VDS now becomes a’ Working Party’ of the council and of necessity, comprises members of the public and some parish councillors. At about the end of the year, the whole community will be given the opportunity to comment and provide further input on the first Draft document.
Would you / could you be a Parish Councillor ? With Elections taking place in May next Year and a number of the existing Councillors intimating that they will not be seeking re-election, this could be your opportunity.

HORDLE GARDENING CLUB What a busy few months for members of the Gardening Club - and not just keeping the garden and hedges under control. Our `packed programme` has included a very enjoyable forest walk (including pub lunch), an evening visit to Spinners Garden Centre (again followed by a pub meal), and a fascinating presentation featuring `Gertrude Jekyll - Artist, Gardener and Craftswoman`. During July a group of 25 members visited the home and gardens of H.R.H. Prince Charles. It was a great day out with plenty to talk about on the way home (but we didn`t meet the owner). Later in July we held two `hands on` events - our `Closed Show` featuring flowers, fruit and vegetables from our gardens, and a Skittles evening when more than 30 members demonstrated their `skills` at felling timber (skittles). Once again, food was also consumed during the evening. The annual BBQ during August was enjoyed by all in spite of the weather and we grateful that we were able to use the Sports Pavilion to enjoy the chicken, hot dogs, burgers and salads followed. by some delicious sweets. In September the walking group will have a half-day ramble and pub lunch in our local area. Annual membership runs from January each year and costs just £6. The Club has around sixty members and we would welcome anyone interested in joining us for the coming year and beyond. All meetings are held at the WI Hall, Ashley Lane, Hordle on the 4th Friday of the month at 7.30pm (except where stated in the Programme of Events)
